Urban Homesteading: Garden Series

Ages 18+.

Feeding the Family from the Backyard: Learn about the many possibilities for producing food right out of your backyard, from gardening and raising fruit trees, to backyard chickens, beekeeping, and landscaping with edible ornamentals and perennial vegetables. Kevin Prier of Suburban Homecraft will discuss various processes, how to decide where to start and how to get the best return on your efforts. If you are interested in any of the homesteading classes, we encourage you to join us for this discussion. Please register in advance.

Pruning and Grafting: Learn how to prune fruit trees and grapes for form and productivity, including thinning, recognizing fruiting spurs, and directing growth patterns. Learn how to graft new varieties onto existing trees or rootstock in time to take advantage of the free fruit grafting material from Eugene’s annual Propagation Fair in March. Class located offsite.

Backyard Poultry: Nothing beats an egg fresh from your backyard. Learn how to raise egg-laying chickens and ducks – breeds, feed, housing and safeguards against predators and disease. Get a small coop or chicken tractor ready for spring hatching season.

Spring Garden Preparation: Get your garden ready for an early planting of peas and start tomato seeds inside so they are ready when the weather warms up. Gardening basics and more advanced techniques will include starts vs. direct sowing, co-planting, attracting beneficial insects, composting, soil amendments and maximizing space. Free seeds included with class.

Intro to Beekeeping:  A productive bee hive can produce up to five galls of honey a year. Learn beekeeping basics, such as equipment, supplies, sources, and techniques, before you commit to building your own hives. Learn about current issues with beekeeping, local laws, common diseases and pests, and their treatment options. Local package bees arrive in early April.

Urban Homesteading: Treat Yourself Series

Ages 18+.

Balms, Butters and Salves: Learn to make a variety of skin creams, lip balms, and herbal salves for gifts or a treat for yourself. Take home some lip balm and herbal salve to keep or give as a gift. All supplies are included in the class fee. Register in advance.

Soap Making: Learn the basics of making bar soap from scratch. Discussion includes the chemistry of saponification, properties of different base oils and local sources, and fragrance oils and other additives while we make a batch of soap. Also learn how to make liquid soap and two forms of laundry soap and take home a share of the soap we produce. All supplies are included in the registration fee. Register in advance.

Aromatherapy and Essential Oils: NEW! Essential oils can have strong therapeutic qualities. Learn how to use them effectively and safely in spray mists, massage oil, and even mosquito repellant creams or sprays. Register in advance.

Arduino for the Hobbyist: Level 1

Canceled. Ages 14+. You don’t have to be a master programmer to use this amazing microcontroller. In this class you will learn to download the necessary software to program the Arduino, open and modify an application from the device library and connect some simple “real world” hardware to the controller. Note: Bring your laptop computer (with a USB port) to this class! You will be required to download and install the Arduino software from the www.arduino.cc web site. Register in advance.

Arduino for the Hobbyist: Level 2

A thermistor temperature sensor will be introduced as an analog input device that will control a cooling fan based on the room’s temperature. Monthly Writer’s Group

Ages 18+. Join Author Valerie Ishan each month for a writers’ salon. The French salon, a product of The Enlightenment in the early 18th century, was a place for women and men to meet to talk about a variety of topics. Spanish, Conversational

Springfest: German Wine Tasting

Ages 21+. Celebrate Germany with an early Springfest, known as Frühlingsfest! Explore some of the country’s best vintages with Monika Rauch, German native and wine importer. Intermediate Dog Training

Ages 18+. You and your dog learn the tools necessary to be good community citizens, including basic dog obedience and community manners. Your dog will learn watch, sit, down, come, stay, wait, greet and many other tools to be a great community citizen. Canine Good Citizen testing is available. If you have owned your dog for a while and bonded with them and your dog is at least 6 months old, this dog obedience class is for you.  No class 1/16, 2/6. Prerequisite: Beginning Dog Training or with instructor approval.

Show Dog Training: Conformation

Conformation classes will teach you how to train and present (handle) your dog in the show ring. stacking, baiting, gaiting, and ring procedure will be stressed. All levels of handling experience are welcome. Dogs must be AKC, UKC, or IABCA registered. Please call instructor Jan Bradfeldt for more information. 541-726-8698. ODTI Driver’s Education

This Oregon Department of Transportation-approved program consists of 33 hours of classroom instruction, six hours of behind-the-wheel instruction, six hours of observation in the vehicle and two hours of parent education.
