Local leader Chris Wig has been appointed to the Willamalane Board of Directors replacing long time board member Janis Ross who stepped down from her seat in January.
Wig will serve the remainder of Ross’s term, which was set to expire the end of June 2019. Three Willamalane board seats will be open and up for election in the Lane County Special Election on May 21, 2019.
Wig is extremely active in the community and is currently serving on three other local boards in addition to the Willamalane board. Wig is a member of the Intergovernmental Housing Policy Board where he leads the Renter Protection Task Team. He also serves on the Lane Community College Human Services Advisory Committee and serves on the Grupo Latino de Accion Directa Board of Directors. Past service includes working on the Eugene Civilian Review Board where he was chair in 2017-18 and on Leadership Eugene/Springfield Steering Committee.
A graduate of the University of Toronto in 2007 with a bachelor’s degree in sociocultural anthropology, Wig received his master’s degree in journalism from the University of Oregon in 2013. Professionally, Wig is a Program Director at Emergence Addiction and Behavioral Therapies in Eugene, a private, not-for-profit agency providing comprehensive, integrated mental health, substance abuse and gambling services to promote the health and quality of life for consumers.
Wig is excited for the opportunity being on the Willamalane Board of Directors presents. “I’m proud to serve our community as a member of the Willamalane board, and I’m excited to get to work and do my part to make sure all families in Springfield can have incredible experiences in our award-winning parks and recreation district.”
Michael Wargo, superintendent at Willamalane Park and Recreation District, is thrilled with the appointment of Wig but notes the tremendous efforts put in by Ross to make Willamalane a top national park district. “Janis Ross did a wonderful job while serving on the Willamalane board and we will miss her insights and connections in the tourism and athletics community. Chris Wig is a tremendous, emerging leader and Willamalane is fortunate to have someone of his background and skill set join this board.”
