Willamalane Awarded $5,000 in Sports Equipment

Willamalane Park and Recreation is having a ball, thanks to a $5,000 sports equipment grant from Dr Pepper Snapple. That means 30 Splashing basketballs, 36 Wilson soccer balls, 50 stopwatches, 25 volleyballs and practice jerseys for kids in Willamalane programs.

Willamalane applied for the grant through Dr Pepper Snapple and its Let’s Play equipment donation program.

“We are pleased to support Willamalane Parks and Recreation with this grant from Let’s Play, part of our overall commitment to bringing play to life and ensuring that kids are able to make play a daily priority,” said Vicki Draughn, Dr Pepper Snapple vice president of community affairs. “We hope that it will make a big difference to kids in the community and give them the equipment and gear they need to get in the game and get active.”

Willamalane received the sports equipment in late December and has already put it to use through its many youth recreational programs and activities.

“It was so exciting around here when we received all these boxes of new basketballs, volleyballs and soccer balls,” said Jen Holland, Willamalane youth sports and recreation program coordinator. “It definitely made the Christmas season brighter for all the kids we serve.”

Holland said that with so many youth programs being offered by Willamalane, new sports equipment is always needed so kids can fully enjoy these activities with the proper equipment. She also noted that grants like these help leverage dollars so the organization can do even more for the community.

Through Dr Pepper Snapple’s partnership with Good Sports, an organization which provides donations of athletic gear, footwear and sports equipment to deserving organizations or communities, Let’s Play has committed $3 million through 2016 to help kids become active through organized sports and fitness programs.
