Come summer, swimming is a sport people everywhere enjoy. But here in Springfield — a city surrounded by swift rivers and deep blue lakes — swimming skills take on added importance.
Willamalane is transitioning to a new, nationally accredited swim lesson curriculum that stresses water safety in addition to achieving core competencies in swimming. Beyond benchmarks in swimming skills, the new Starfish Swimming program instructs students in water safety rules and drowning prevention.
“We want to teach students to enjoy the water in a fun and safe way, to allow for a lifetime of fitness and fun,” says Willamalane Aquatics Program Manager Megan Jackson.
The Starfish Aquatics Institute, which formulated the program, is one of the largest lifeguard, swim instructor and pool operator certifying agencies In the United States. Starfish Swimming is for students of all ages and abilities, from infant through pre-swim team.
Willamalane’s new term of swimming lessons begins June 22. Find a class that fits your schedule!
