Ice Storm Clean-Up Information
Some piles of debris are on the north side of Shana’s Trail.
75th Anniversary Mural
In celebration of Willamalane’s 75th anniversary, local artist Bayne Gardner created a 100 x 35-foot mural at Willamalane Park. The artwork was unveiled at a community celebration on September 29, 2019. In addition, event attendees signed the artwork. PacificSource Health Plans and the Springfield Arts Commission helped fund this project.
Shana's Trail
An 800-meter (half-mile) running trail opened at Willamalane Park in 2021, honoring the former Springfield High School track athlete Shana Thomas Barr. Shana’s Trail is composed of the same specially applied aggregate and bark, making Pre’s Trail a popular destination for runners.
Shana's trail was made possible, in part, by a family foundation grant from the Shana Thomas Barr Memorial Fund. This project received financial or in-kind contributions from McKenzie-Willamette Medical Center, the Wildish Companies, Rexius Forest Products, the Springfield Rotary Club, the Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce, Willamalane, SUB, the City of Springfield, and Springfield Public Schools.
Outdoor Fitness Station
An outdoor fitness station located next to Shana's Trail at Willamalane Park features an array of accessible equipment that includes a chin-up station, chest press, and a bench dip station.
Veterans Plaza
The Springfield Vietnam Veterans Memorial was constructed at Willamalane Park in 1968 in collaboration between Willamalane and the City of Springfield. The memorial was updated in 2016, in partnership with the City of Springfield, to create a grander plaza and improve accessibility, as envisioned by Vietnam Veterans of America, Veterans of Foreign Wars, and Veterans for Peace. The memorial includes a large granite monument engraved with an artistic rendering of a combat soldier and a complete list of Springfield military veterans who gave their lives.
The women's memorial, installed in 2017, is a powerful and emotionally evocative bronze sculpture, The Lionesses. The three lionesses represent past, present, and future female veterans. Springfield Women’s Veterans Committee worked with Rip Caswell, a Portland sculptor, to come up with the design of three lionesses. In 2018, the American Rosie the Riveter Association honored the women who made history on the Home Front during World War II with a new garden of rose bushes. It’s one of only a handful of monuments nationwide that honors women in the U.S. military.
